About IVC Filters
IVC filters are small, metal devices installed in veins to prevent blood clots. The device is placed specifically inside of the inferior vena cava, which is the vein that transports blood to and from the heart and lungs. IVC filters were prescribed to patients at risk for blood clots for a variety of reasons, but many had recently sustained serious trauma such as in a car accident, a fall, spine injury, or even cancer patients.
IVC Filter Migration
Some patients have experienced migration of their IVC filter, rendering the device ineffective at preventing blood clots. Without the device working properly, some patients experienced deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Another side effect of IVC filter migration is perforation of internal organs. A defective product attorney in Portland can evaluate your case and help you fight for fair compensation for injuries caused by IVC filter migration.
FDA Reports on the IVC Filter
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that between 2005 and 2010, it received more than 900 reports of negative side effects associated with the IVC filter. The most common (around 35% of all reports) was device migration. The next most frequent complication was device embolization, which occurs when components of the device detach from it.
There have also been reports of IVC filter complications if the device is left inside of the inferior vena cava for longer than necessary. This is particularly true of retrievable IVC filters, which the FDA recommends removing within 54 days of implantation.
