Help fight cancer!

Lately the number of articles in the Oregonian about cancer seems to be on the rise. A couple weeks ago there was a lengthy feature about a pregnant woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer, today there was an article about cancer blogs, and there have been many others.

Is the number of articles actually increasing, or am I just becoming more aware of them? Though I am now at an age where cancer is not completely uncommon, I know that cancer can affect individuals at any age. Those of us who are healthy make take our conditions for granted. Awareness is key, and so is involvement. There are countless organizations raising money for research and to increase public awareness of every type of cancer, and similarly, there are countless ways we can help.

Recently a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer. She isn’t the first, either, but hearing about her condition made me think again about breast cancer research and fundraising. The Race for the Cure, sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is coming up in Portland (on September 21, 2008), and online registration is now open. If you can’t run, you can always volunteer, donate money, or talk your friends into running!

Another great organization dedicated to breast cancer research is the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation allocates at least 85 cents of every donated dollar to research and awareness programs.
